Custodian – Physical Plant – University of Jamestown
Position Title : Custodian
Location : Jamestown, North Dakota
Employment Type : Full-time, 12-month staff position, 40 weekly hours

The University of Jamestown is seeking a dependable, detail-orientated individual to join our team as a Custodian.  As a custodian, you will play a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for our students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Cleaning: Perform routine cleaning tasks including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and disinfecting surfaces. Ensure that restrooms, lounges, kitchenettes, and common areas are clean and stocked with necessary supplies.
  • Maintenance: Utilize the work order system to report items in need of maintenance.  Shoveling out main entrances of assigned buildings after snow fall events.
  • Waste Management: Empty trash bins, dispose of waste properly, and ensure that recycling and trash are handled according to established procedures.
  • Floor Care: Maintain floors by using appropriate cleaning methods and equipment. This includes sweeping, mopping, polishing, and vacuuming.
  • Surface Cleaning: Clean and sanitize surfaces including countertops, windows, glass doors, desks, and fixtures. Ensure that high-touch areas are disinfected regularly.
  • Supply Management: Monitor and manage cleaning supplies and equipment. Report inventory levels and order supplies as needed to ensure availability.
  • Safety Compliance: Follow safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment. Use cleaning chemicals and equipment according to safety standards and manufacturer instructions.
  • Event Support: Assist with the setup and cleanup of events, meetings, or special functions as required.
  • Customer Service: Address any concerns or requests from building occupants or visitors professionally and courteously. Responsibility of unlocking assigned buildings in the morning.
Skills:
  • Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Familiarity with cleaning chemicals and equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Good communication skills and a customer-oriented attitude.
  • Certifications: None required, but certification in the use of cleaning chemicals or equipment is a plus.
Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed indoors with occasional outdoor tasks.
  • Requires the use of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
  • The position may involve working evenings or weekends depending on the facility’s needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications :
  • High school diploma or GED preferred (not required)
  • Previous custodial, janitorial, or cleaning experience is a plus but not required – we will train the right candidate
  • Ability to lift/push/pull up to 50 lbs and perform physical work (bending, kneeling, climbing stairs, etc.)
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in work quality
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Positive attitude and professional demeanor
  • Must pass a criminal background check
