Job Description

BLACKBARN Restaurant is an American restaurant located in the heart of Flatiron, overlooking Madison Square Park. It is helmed by acclaimed Chef and Restaurateur John Doherty , James Beard Award Winner and formerly the Executive Chef at the iconic Waldorf-Astoria in NYC. 

BLACKBARN is one of the top farm-to-table restaurants in New York, NY offering a sophisticated menu in the comfort of a modern barn. It serves lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch in its various dining rooms. The restaurant’s team takes great pride in sourcing locally from farms in the tri-state area and creating meaningful partnerships with local farmers, artisans, and ranchers.

What We Ask of You:

  • Availability for AM shifts is a must
  • This role requires mostly butchering but will include other food prep as delegated by kitchen leadership. Previous butcher experience is required.
  • Knowledge of whole-animal butchery, fish breakdown, and product preservation

Butcher Qualifications and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Break down and portion proteins with accuracy, consistency, and attention to detail

  • Maintain quality standards for all meats and proteins used in the kitchen

  • Follow all portioning guidelines, prep standards, and kitchen procedures

  • Label, store, and rotate product properly to maintain freshness and safety

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary workstation at all times

  • Communicate product needs, shortages, or quality issues to leadership

  • Communicates clearly and respectfully with everyone on every level 

  • Support prep and kitchen operations as needed

  • Complete opening and closing duties, including station breakdown and cleaning

  • Demonstrates highly organized work habits

  • Maintains proper sanitation and safety procedures

  • Takes ownership of one’s work station and preparations

  • Completes assigned work on time

  • Looks for ways to help others and makes a positive impact on the operation

  • Finds things to do when there is “nothing to do”

Minimum Education and Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years previous culinary experience within a kitchen setting is essential.

  • Must be organized, self-motivated, and proactive with a strong attention to detail.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Constant standing and movement

  • Occasional exposure to cold, heat, and kitchen environments

  • Occasional stooping, kneeling, or crouching

  • Occasional lifting or carrying up to 50 lbs

  • Frequent use of hands, wrists, and arms for precision work

  • Constant communication with team members

  • Role may include job duties or tasks requiring repetitive motion.

  • Must be able to work and remain focused in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule inclusive of varying shifts such as days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
